Just a 30-minute boat ride from Bali, Nusa Lembongan is an under-the-radar island paradise. Often described as “Bali years ago,” you won’t find luxury hotel chains here. Instead, Nusa Lembongan is an adventurous retreat for travelers looking for an authentic island escape. Cross the iconic Yellow Bridge, discover marine life tucked away in coral reefs and mangroves, and enjoy beautiful sunsets on the tranquil island. From how to get to Nusa Lembongan and the best hotels, beaches, sunset spots, and restaurants, here is everything you need to know about planning a trip to the island.
Nusa Lembongan is a part of the trio of Nusa Islands and each possess its own unique charm. Know Before You Go
- Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Nusa Lembongan is May – October, which coincides with the dry season. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and the water is calmer. Temperatures range from 70°F to upper 80s °F during this time frame.
- How to Get Around: Once you reach the island, rent a scooter or bicycle to get around Nusa Lembongan.
- Currency: The currency on Nusa Lembongan is the Indonesian Rupiah, the same as Bali. While most restaurants take credit cards, it is necessary to have some cash for entrance fees, small ferries, scooter rental, and other various activities. There are a few ATMs on the island, but I recommend coming over with enough cash just in case the machines are down or out of cash.
- Packing Essentials: Be sure to bring comfortable shorts, lightweight dresses, swim suit, linen shirt, and casual tank tops. Sturdy adventure sandals, like these Tevas, are a must for any trip to Indonesia. Bug repellent is also a must-pack and this deet-free spray is my favorite. I also recommend bringing a lightweight towel to take with you for sitting on the beach and drying off. Read my complete Bali Packing List, coming soon.
How to Get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali
The best way to get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali is to take a fast boat from Bali’s Sanur Harbor. Nusa Lembongan is about 15 miles from Bali’s mainland across the Badung Strait. From Sanur, the boat ride takes 30-45 minutes depending on weather conditions. Crossing in the morning is generally smoother than in the afternoon. During busy season, you’ll want to book your fast boat in advance. You can check fast boat schedules here. Many fast boat companies offer hotel pickup and drop off which is helpful for logistics!
Where to Stay on Nusa Lembongan
The two of the best areas to stay on Nusa Lembongan are along Jungutbatu Beach and around Mushroom Bay. Keep in mind you won’t find ultra-luxe resorts with Michelin starred dining on the island. Instead Nusa Lembongan offers a more authentic island experience with charming boutique properties.
- The Tamarind Resort – Luxury hotel close to Jungutbatu Beach
- Hai Tide Beach Resort – Charming bungalow hotel by Mushroom Bay Beach
- The Shacks at Sandy Bay – Cozy retreat near Sandy Bay Beach & Devil’s Tears
- Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Spa – One of the top-rated properties on the island not far from Jungutbatu Beach
- Mandala The Bay – Stunning five-bedroom villa big enough for a group of friends located near Sandy Bay
Best Things To Do
Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan
Connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, the colorful Yellow Bridge stands out as an iconic vista against the pale blue shallows between the islands. Less than two meters wide, only travelers on foot, scooters, and bicycles can cross the narrow suspension bridge. The bridge is the only way to get between the islands (other than by boat) so odds are high you’ll cross it while exploring between the two islands. Make sure to set aside some time to enjoy the views from the Yellow Bridge!
Devil’s Tears at Sunset
Dramatic waves crash against the rocky coastal cliffs causing sea mist to spray into the air creating “Devil’s Tears.” This natural phenomenon attracts visitors in the evening as the setting sun shines through the mist for a captivating sight. Stop by at sunset and marvel at the beautiful spectacle.
Explore the Mangrove Forest
Stretching across the northeast coastline, the peaceful mangrove forest is an important part of the island’s marine ecosystem. Trees tower over the shallow waters and the intricate root systems serves as a protective nursery for many marine species. Colorful birds and monitor lizards are a few of the impressive species that call this area home. Take a boat ride or kayak through the winding waterways and enjoy the serenity of nature.
Dream Beach, Mushroom Bay Beach, & Jungutbatu Beach
Nusa Lembongan is known for its beautiful beaches. Dream Beach, Mushroom Bay Beach, and Jungutbatu Beach are the best on the island. The aptly named Dream Beach is a picture-perfect beach nestled between the rocks. Bring a towel, relax on the stunning beach, and, if conditions permit, wade into the water to cool off. Partially sheltered with generally calm waters, Mushroom Bay Beach is the best for swimming. Accompanied by a perfect view of Bali’s Mount Agung, Jungtbatu Beach is long and stunning with several beach clubs to relax at—Ohana’s Beach Club is the best here!
Snorkel & Scuba Dive – Manta Rays & Coral Reefs
Nusa Lembongan’s beauty doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. The Nusa Islands are home to the best snorkeling and diving around Bali. Underneath the brilliant blues is a vibrant coral ecosystem and crystal-clear visibility. Manta Point, just off Nusa Penida, is one of the few places in the world you can witness giant manta rays. Crystal Bay, between Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, offers a diversity of fish and coral sightings. Toyapakeh also features an incredible coral reef with a variety of marine life. At the popular Mangrove Point you can glimpse reef sharks, puffer fish, and other exotic marine life. A snorkel or scuba excursion is a can’t miss highlight on Nusa Lembongan!
Watch the Cliff Jumpers & Surfers at Mahana Point
The unique restaurant is perched on a cliff surrounded by water on three sides. Gaze over the cliffside at the churning waters below, and you’re sure to see impressive surfing skills on display. Mahana Point is also a famous cliff jumping spot. Stop by for a drink and a snack while you watch adrenaline junkies catch waves and leap into the water below. If you want to take the leap yourself, just make sure to ask about conditions first. While Mahana Point is technically on Nusa Ceningan, it’s easy to reach the by crossing the Yellow Bridge.
Day Trip to Nusa Penida
The most famous of the Nusa Islands, Nusa Penida is known for its wild and beautiful landscapes. Here you’ll see virgin rain forests fringed by jaw dropping cliffs that plunge into the glittering sea below. Highlights on the untamed Nusa island include Diamond Beach, Kelingking Beach (iconic dinosaur-shaped beach), and a natural infinity pool known as Angel’s Billabong. Book a guide and take a day trip to Nusa Penida for an adventure-filled day!
The roads on Nusa Penida are unforgiving. I highly recommend hiring a driver or booking a tour rather than attempting to navigate the roads. To get to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan, take a 15-minute ferry departing from Nusa Lembongan’s Toya Pakeh Harbour.
Sunset drinks & dinner at Sandy Bay Beach Club is a must on Nusa Lembongan.
